ArcelorMittal halts green steel production – a wake-up call?

Steelproduction

Steel giant ArcelorMittal is pulling out of its planned CO₂-free production in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt – despite receiving a €1.3 billion funding commitment.

The reason: excessively high and volatile electricity prices, coupled with a lack of planning certainty.
Instead, the company is investing in France – where affordable nuclear energy is available.

Germany is losing ground in the international competition for industrial locations to countries with lower energy costs – such as France (nuclear power).

Industry is turning away – investments are flowing to places where energy is reliable and affordable.

In Bremen and Brandenburg, politicians and labor unions are sounding the alarm – jobs and billions in investment are at risk.

Relevance for the Aluminium Industry
For us at aluscreen, this clearly shows:
Without stable energy prices, a green transformation in aluminium production is also not possible. Subsidies are of little help if the foundation – affordable electricity – is missing.
